It's less explicit than some of his other works and it's a big favourite in this house – Hannah and I actually cannibalised this copy so we could frame some of the pages for our bedroom (pictures which, by the way, Hannah sort of rolls her eyes at whenever we have guests, as though to silently imply that she wasn't the one that chose and hung them). ![]() His heroines tend to be wide-eyed but self-assured naïfs and this one is no exception – it's about a girl who falls asleep reading Swift and goes on to have, or more likely fantasize about, several ludicrous gulliverian adventures in a series of abbreviated outfits. ![]() He's also a very skilled draughtsman – not quite on the level of François Bourgeon, say, but enough to lift him head and shoulders above most of the competition. Unlike his many American imitators, Manara never feels misogynistic to me – there is something very playful and somehow European about his style that makes you feel he is laughing as he works, rather than leering. I unashamedly love Milo Manara, whom I discovered at a too-young age and whose continental sexiness fuelled a lifelong appreciation of a) bande-dessinée literature and b) reading in foreign languages, both of which led me to many other more serious and amazing discoveries later. ![]()
